The hippie culture emerged around 1965 in the United States , particularly in the San Francisco area. From there, it spread throughout the world. Especially during the Vietnam War, many people joined the hippies to show that they were against the war.
The Woodstock music festival in 1969 is considered the high point of the hippie movement of the 1960s. The famous heroes of the hippie movement, such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the group Jefferson Airplane, sang and played at this concert. Over 400,000 spectators attended the festival.
Also famous are the trips to India that many hippies made at that time. They travelled in groups by hitchhiking or by bus through Europe and Asia . The usual route they took is still known today as the "Hippie Trail".
